Celebrating Earth through the Visual Arts

Oranbega Celebrates Earth with a Zoom Earth Day program focusing on artists building environmental awareness through their work.

Thursday, April 22 at 7PM, join us for our Earth Day Celebration of the Arts and the Earth. Featuring our own Resident Painter, Robert Phipps, whose paintings are deeply influenced by his love and care for the planet. The night explores two series from Robert’s career.

The first explores his reflections on the nuclear accident at Chernobyl. The second is of Roundel paintings focusing on the Outer Islands near Mount Desert Island, Maine. Robert will tell the stories behind his making of these art pieces. Participants will have a chance not only to see these moving and beautiful works but to question and converse with their maker.

The program also features the work of David G. Allen, an environmental sculptor and stone worker. Based in Sebago, Maine, David possesses a growing a national reputation as a “Rock Star” in the world of environmental art. His unique installations fascinate the viewer with their kinetic and structural ingenuity, which nevertheless respects the intrinsic nature of the stone or other materials (ice, for instance!) with which he works. David’s schedule may not allow him to be on hand in person for the Zoom event. We will, however, be able to share his recorded thoughts about his process and his inspiration from the earth.

Finally, the program concludes with a look at the work of other area artists influenced by the natural world. Artists interested in submitting a slide or two for inclusion in this section of the program, please contact us before April 8.
